Background

Devin D, the founder of Santa Lucia Manufacturing in California, made a career transition from welding to machining, viewing machining as a safer long-term career path with better potential. He began his journey by taking on side work with old machines in his garage. Eventually, the revenue from his nighttime business surpassed his salary, prompting him to take the leap and start his own business.

Santa Lucia Manufacturing specializes in making very small, precise parts, often out of exotic alloys and other esoteric materials. Devin enjoys "doing the work that nobody else wants to do," which involves tight tolerances and difficult features. The shop operates with a focus on automation and minimal staffing, currently housing five CNC lathes and a variety of other equipment, including a new Hexagon CMM.

Devin has a strong reputation in the industry and his market, which means he has never had to actively seek work. He works closely with clients, often anticipating their needs and running extra parts to ensure quick delivery, a practice he considers "cheap insurance" compared to losing a client due to a late delivery.

As a talented machinist who is "not a business person," Devin's main challenge was managing the business side of his operation.

  • Outgrowing Manual Systems: Devin initially managed everything using an Excel spreadsheet and Windows folders, but he eventually outgrew that, realizing there's a limit to how much one person can keep in their head.
  • Overly Complex ERP Software: Following industry trends, Devin tried implementing ProShop, but he didn't realize how much work was involved. He found it "unnecessarily big" and estimated it took "probably three or four times the amount of work than just doing everything manually.”
  • Wasted Time on Administration: Devin felt the complexity of the previous system forced him to spend two to three hours a day sitting at the computer. His focus needs to be on "making money, not counting the money." He preferred to be focused on manufacturing, automation, and finding ways to nest more parts on the table.

Frustrated with his existing solution, Devin went to an AI tool to devise plans to build his own ERP system. AI surprisingly suggested he look at StartProto. Devin was initially skeptical, assuming all ERP systems were outdated. However, he quickly realized that StartProto is a modern company that is implementing AI from the ground up.

StartProto's cloud manufacturing software offered the necessary tools without the complexity Devin had previously experienced.

Feature Highlights

  • Automated Purchasing (AI-Powered): When an insert or other material runs out, StartProto allows Devin to simply take a photo of the item and tell the system to "Go buy one". The system automatically identifies the part, creates the purchase order, and finds the vendor.
  • Intuitive, Time-Saving Design: Unlike his previous system, where simple tasks could take 15 minutes, StartProto is designed to free up time so Devin can focus on making money. The goal of the system is to drive efficiency in running the business and free up the user to make the cool parts.
  • Modern Platform: StartProto provided the modern interface and approach that Devin felt was lacking in legacy competitors' job shop MRP systems.

By switching to StartProto, Devin successfully streamlined his business operations, allowing him to refocus his energy on manufacturing and growth.

  • Increased Focus on Production: Devin is no longer stuck sitting in front of the computer 2 to 3 hours a day and can instead focus on programming his new five-axis machine and automating his processes.
  • Supports Growth and Automation: The efficiency of StartProto’s mes software aligns with Devin’s ultimate goal of automation. The system supports his vision of keeping machines running with minimal staffing.
I want to be good at manufacturing. I want to find ways to nest more parts on the table to automate as much as possible. I want to find ways to make it so that we can bring make these parts affordably and still make good money on them.
